Robert “Boo Lee” Williams knew John White as a youngster growing up in the Third Ward, which is where Texas Southern University is located and was just across Scott Street from Jeppesen Stadium. Williams was a 1967 graduate of Yates High School, which was a block from Jeppesen Stadium and the University of Houston. Williams was in the last graduating class of Yates before the desegregation of Houston high schools in the 1967–1968 school year.

Williams remembered White from when he played at TSU:

I knew all about John White when he played for Coach Durley at TSU. He was a heckuva pass catcher and player in the SWAC. Unfortunately, when he went to the Oilers, I don’t think they used him enough. George Blanda hardly ever threw to him. I knew him a little bit. I was only ten or eleven years old when he played for TSU, but he was always nice to us kids. All of us Third Ward kids were thrilled to see him play for the Oilers.
